Why diagnostics

The information infrastructure beneath modern healthcare.

Every clinical decision begins with a question. Is this cancer? Will this treatment work? Is the disease progressing? Can it be detected earlier? Diagnostics exist to answer those questions.

Precision medicine, oncology, transplantation, infectious disease, screening, public health and increasingly artificial intelligence all depend on accurate biological information arriving at the right time. Yet this underlying information layer remains one of the least understood and most strategically neglected parts of healthcare.

My perspective

Few people have worked across the full diagnostics continuum.

My experience spans scientific discovery, product development, validation, regulation, commercialisation, investment evaluation, implementation and ecosystem building. That breadth shapes how I assess both individual opportunities and the systems around them.

Discovery

My scientific career began in genomics, bioinformatics and translational research. Following doctoral and postdoctoral training in Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States, I spent more than twelve years leading a computational genomics research group at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência.

Development, validation, regulation and commercialisation

I helped establish Portugal’s first dedicated clinical oncogenomics company, introducing liquid-biopsy services when the technology was still largely absent from routine clinical practice in the country. I later founded and led Ophiomics through the journey from scientific concept to regulated precision-diagnostics products, including clinical validation, CE and UKCA marking, ISO 13485, manufacturing, fundraising, partnerships and international commercialisation.

Investment and evaluation

Having raised equity and non-dilutive funding, built ventures, reviewed opportunities and worked with investors and funders, I became increasingly interested in how diagnostic opportunities are evaluated and why conventional maturity measures often fail to capture their real risks.

Implementation

Diagnostics only matter when they influence decisions. Work with hospitals, laboratories, clinicians, health systems and translational programmes has reinforced a simple lesson: success depends not only on the technology, but on its fit with clinical workflows, procurement, reimbursement and healthcare infrastructure.

Infrastructure and capability

Beyond individual products lies a larger question: how do organisations, ecosystems and countries build diagnostic capability? My work has included building BioData.pt and its connection to ELIXIR, helping establish and lead Healthcare City, contributing to sector strategy through P-BIO, and developing work on translational infrastructure and diagnostics sovereignty.
